Global leading cable manufacturer Riyadh Cables has recently opened power transmission and distribution market opportunities, by investing in new production and testing facilities for Extra High Voltage cable systems.
Riyadh Cables recently signed a technology know-how transfer agreement with Brugg Cables, to start producing two new 400 kV EHV cable systems, conforming with specifications set by Riyadh Cables’ client Saudi Electricity Company.
KEMA Laboratories in the Netherlands completed the System and PQ tests as per IEC 62067 standard for power cables with extruded insulation and their accessories for rated voltages above 150 kV and up to 500 kV. Initial systems tests finished at the end of 2018, while the PQ tests finished at the end of 2019.
Final approval for the system from Saudi Electricity Company finalised February 2020. The two 400kV systems included two joints, one directly buried and the other installed in a tunnel; two SF6 terminations, one plugin dry type, and the other a wet type; and two outdoor terminations.
All of the accessories were nearly identical for both systems. The two cables, installed in series, were both 2500 mm2 however the cable construction varied with different sized insulation thickness, metallic screening and outer sheathing.

Riyadh Cables, a global leading cable manufacturer, showcased its renewable energy capabilities with its newly launched range of solar cables.
Riyadh Cables is the first Saudi company to establish a research and development team for solar cables, with consideration taken over local and international demand.
The new cables are UV resistant and are available for use both indoor and outdoor; in hazardous areas; industrial areas; and with agriculture, using XLHF cross-linked halogen-free sheathing for insulation, which is flame retardant as per IEC 60332-1.
The cables also comply with international standards, such as IEC 62930:2017, BS EN 50618:2014, UL 4703:2014 and TÜV 2 PfG 1169/08.2007.
The growing local demand for solar cables, which transmit the DC of solar energy power plants, is expected to reach up to 1.5GW. Riyadh Cables also provides a range of low voltage, medium voltage and high voltage power cables, making them a turnkey partner for your renewable energy project.
Riyadh Cables was also very proud to deliver its solar cables to the SKAKA solar plant, the first solar power project in Saudi Arabia.
